St. Lawrence Hall

Built in 1850 to serve as the City's public meeting place, the St. Lawrence Hall has,
over the years, hosted numerous memorable events. Jenny Lind, the Swedish
Nightingale, sang to packed houses here in 1851. Ten years later, Tom
Thumb attracted scores of fascinated spectators.

Restored in 1967 as the City of Toronto's Centennial project, the St.
Lawrence Hall continues to operate as a site for social and business functions, large
and small. The St. Lawrence Hall is spacious enough to handle large conferences
and meetings, yet intimate enough to hold a small gathering. The complex
has a history of drawing people to it for a wide variety of reasons. Today
the St.
Lawrence Hall is a facility of choice for the film industry, serving as a
staging ground for TV series, movie sets and music videos.

Step Inside The Elegance Of Another Era

Just one glance at the superb architecture of the St.
Lawrence Hall, with its sweeping
Corinthian columns and distinctive cupola, will give you some idea of
the elegance inside. Walk up the grand staircase (or take the elevator)
to the Great Hall, perhaps the venue's most beautiful feature. This authentically
reproduced room, with its huge gas-lit chandelier and elaborate ornamental
plaster ceiling, can comfortably seat 130 people for dinner. Included
in the rental fee are several anterooms and a VIP lounge. Throughout,
red plush furnishings and fine paintings complement the decor and add
a luxurious touch to any affair.

The St. Lawrence Hall can be rented for the following rates and group
sizes. Days are 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.; nights are 6:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m.
Early access is available for a minimal charge, subject to availability.

The Assembly Hall

Built in 1898, Assembly Hall was originally part of the Lakeshore Psychiatric
Hospital. It has served as a place of recreation and worship for patients,
hospital staff and local residents. There was no comparable facility in
the area, therefore the hall was the principal gathering place for community
events such as the celebration of the extension of the Long Branch streetcar
along Lakeshore Blvd. West. The Assembly Hall continued in its role as home
to dances, religious services and local celebrations until the hospital
closed its doors in 1979.

As politicians, developers and local residents debated the eventual fate
of the Lakeshore buildings, the site continued to decline. In response
to the advocacy of a committed group of local residents and arts groups,
the former City of Etobicoke was approved funds in 1998 to restore the
Assembly Hall as a community cultural centre.
In 1999, restoration began. It was based on an original concept which
wedded the original brick structure to a modern glass atrium that provides
a bright and airy entranceway to the hall.
The restored Assembly Hall has been designed to meet a variety of cultural
and community needs. The beautiful 200+ seat Performance Hall is a venue
for music, meetings, theatre, dance, receptions and special events. The
main floor contains three community rooms, which have hosted art classes, meetings,
workshops and rehearsals.
